Japanese Language SchoolThe Moiliili Community Center (MCC) traces its roots back to the late 1890s where small language classes were held in the home of Kihachi Kashiwabara. Today, we proudly continue to offer Japanese Language classes to the children of Moiliili and our surrounding communities. In doing so, we hope to honor all those individuals who fought, struggled and put their hearts & souls into "laying the foundation" for what we know today as the Moiliili Community Center.
MCC's Japanese Language School is available to elementary-aged children in Kindergarten through the Fifth grade. Children will learn Japanese through repetitive speaking, reading and writing in a contemporary, interactive setting rather than the traditional style most of us are accustomed to. Various cultural events and activities are planned throughout the course of the school year to expose the children to the culture and to enhance their learning. Computer lessons and shodo (calligraphy) classes have also been included in the curriculum for the upper grade levels. Children will also put on a performance for family & friends at our annual Christmas Program in December and our Year-End Program & Graduation in May. Classes are held everyday, Monday through Friday afternoons and are aligned with the public school calendar. Japanese Language School will be closed during the public school's fall, winter, spring and summer breaks/recess'. In addition, all Federal & State holidays are observed. Classes are forty-five (45) minutes in duration. Japanese School is in session between the hours of 3:10 p.m.-4:40 p.m. The Director will set the bell schedule each school year based on enrollment. MCC offers two options for Japanese Language School participants: Japanese Language School & After-School Program
