History of Moiliili

A rich heritage at the turn of the century... a marsh-land of ponds, lotus farms, and rice fields, small shops and businesses and the stone quarry...

Queen Kamamalu and her court enjoyed summers swimming in the Kapaakea springs. Dirt trails connected wooden frame houses, burning wood heated the water for the furo. A manapua man carried his wares in baskets from a bamboo pole on his back.

The food, customs, and religions of homelands prevailed and the common interests of many for their neighborhood became molded into a strong, active, and closely knit community.

Moiliili Community Center...

born of the need to serve people, traces its roots to the founding of a Japanese language school in a private home in the late 1800's and the purchase of the present site in 1928. Founded as a council in 1942, it was formally chartered as an association in 1945, and renamed the Moiliili Community Center in 1965.
